RK Saha, took over as the Chairman Cum Managing Director (CMD), of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) from August 1st. Saha was the former Director Technical, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), succeeded RP Ritolia, who retired on July 31.

Saha outlined his priorities, "The company has to exceed its production by 5 MT from its production figures of the last fiscal, new projects have to be started amidst over riding problems of land acquisition and forest clearance; time lost in the commencement of new projects have to be made up, aging equipments have to be replaced amongst others".

CCL had produced 44.2 Million Tonnes (MT), in 2007-08; as per the annual plan, its target for the current fiscal was 47 MT. In addition, the government has called for an incremental production of 2 MT, in 2008-09. This adds up the target to 49 MT in 2008-09.

CCL has five projects lined up which collectively can augment production to the tune of 5.19 MT. These are Karo, Konar, North Urimari, Tapin South and Purnadih. However the projects are delayed due several problems. "We have already lost four months from the current fiscal, on the aforesaid projects", Saha admitted. This loss of production would be made up through isolated open cast mining patches. Eleven such patches have been identified of which four would be taken up in the first phase through outsourcing. Work order is expected by November.

Two of the subsidiary's ambitious virgin projects Magadh and Amrapali, with projected production of 20 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) and 12 MTPA respectively, are facing rough weather following problems of land acquisition and forest clearance. "One of my key priorities would be to expedite the implementation of these projects and develop the basic infrastructure necessary to kick start them by 2010-2011, through outsourcing", he stressed.

He also mentioned of according thrust to enhance production through underground mining. From 1.83 MT in 2007-08, CCL has projected an underground production of 2.26 MT, in the current fiscal. Global tenders have been floated for the hiring of the latest world class High Wall Mining equipments, for Amlo project. "The technique is yet to be introduced in the country, a number of mining companies have floated tenders in this regard, we hope we can acquire and start it first", said the CCL Chief. To add to it,tenders have been floated to acquire the Continuous miner technique for Churi underground mines and project has been prepared for Parej (East).

Keeping an eye on enhancing departmental efficiency and production, Saha intends to replace ageing equipments with new machines. The Collieries would also be technologically upgraded.
