RS Pandey, Secretary (MoP&NG) led a five-member delegation to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan to represent India at a high-level International conference, “Reliable and Stable Transit of Energy and its Role in Ensuring Sustainable Development and International Cooperation.”

The delegation included officials from Department of Fertilizers, ONGC Videsh Ltd and GAIL. Secretary met Tachberdi Tagiev, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Oil and Gas and Annaguly Deryaev, Minister of Oil and Gas to discuss issues of bilateral interests. India joined the TAPI gas pipeline project in April 2008.
During the meetings, Pandey reiterated India’s commitment for comprehensive engagement with Turkmenistan in energy sphere. The year 2008 witnessed unprecedented volatility in the oil market. “We strongly feel that stable oil and gas market is in the best interest of both producers and consumers,” he said.
As a major producer of natural gas in our neighborhood, Turkmenistan can play an important role in providing a measure of stability to the turbulent period we have witnessed during the last 18 months, he added.

Recognising the necessity of smooth and uninterrupted transport of energy flow from producing to consuming countries, we fully support the initiative taken by the Government of Turkmenistan in this regard,” said Pandey. While reiterating to the historical ties between the two countries, the Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister welcomed strengthening of bilateral energy cooperation.
