Cairn India transforms lives of communities in which it operates
Cairn India, the country’s largest independent upstream oil and gas company, has always believed in fostering positive relationships with all its stakeholders. It has been a strong supporter of inclusive and sustainable development of people in the communities in which it operates. In Barmer, Rajasthan, where much of Cairn’s operations in India are based, the company has been empowering community members with skills, funds, opportunities and the confidence to improve their lives and livelihoods. These activities have not just helped community members but also boosted the socio-economic development of the isolated Barmer district. To date, through its inclusive growth approach, Cairn India has been able to benefit 700,000 community members through various community-development initiatives in the region.
In recognition of its contribution, Cairn India was recently awarded the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2015 in Domain Excellence for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). In his acceptance speech, Mr Mayank Ashar, CEO and Managing Director, Cairn India Limited, dedicated the award to the employees and partners of Cairn India and to the people of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. He said, “At Cairn India, Corporate Social Responsibility is an integral part of our business philosophy, as sustainable and inclusive growth in our area of operation is essential for holistic development. Cairn India has been at the helm of some wonderful socio-economic transformation of the communities it works with.”
The CII-ITC Sustainability Awards are a symbol of credibility for businesses and have been recognizing sustainable businesses for over a decade now. The CII-ITC collaboration is seeking ways to be more sustainable and inclusive in their activities. Winners of these awards are role models that inspire all business to follow suit. With a strong belief in harbouring a positive and symbiotic relationship with its stakeholders, Cairn India’s projects are rooted in the philosophy of giving back. It has been a strong supporter of inclusive and sustainable development of people in the communities in which it operates.

HIGHLIGHTS OF CAIRN INDIA’S SUSTAINABILITY VISION
Economic
- 5,000 farmers impacted by bringing in 200 hectares of waste land under cultivation; introduction of farm-based initiatives like training and capacity building of farmers on latest agri-techniques, natural resource management and water harvesting
- 15,000 unemployed youth given vocational skill training through Cairn Enterprise, its seven satellite centres across Barmer and Cairn Centre of Excellence state-of-the-art vocational training center in Jodhpur
Social
- INR 90 million generated over a period of 8 years through the Dairy Development Program aimed at collection of milk from all the community members. The program has also helped in merging local caste barriers
- 6,000 household toilets; 200 school toilets constructed, making it possible for over 50,000 community members to lead a hygienic and quality life
Environmental
- 100,000 people now have access to safe drinking water through community based RO plants across Barmer, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh
- 1,000 community members have access to solar based electricity in Barmer
Health
- 500,000 people impacted via health initiatives like mobile medical vans and maternal child health program, across 11 districts of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh
Education
- 500,000 students impacted through Cairn’s education and scholarship programs, improving quality of education in rural government schools
